week 10: final blog submission

Sketches created on iPad

Sketches for week 7, 5 & 8 models respectively.

Concept sketches have been a major part of my creative process.
Rather than experimenting with models, I generally prefer to experiment
using digital media to save materials and effort.

Written Statement Draft

In the remake of my week 5 model, I aimed to explore minimalistic lighting and structure through simple, organic forms. I believe in the modernist ideal of 'less is more', and hoped to reiterate this through my room concept. By carving out moon-like slants and incorporating erratic folding patterns into the structure, I was able to create a simple, clean space with creative shadows. I enjoyed using blank card paper due to their plain texture, and found it effective to explore lighting and form in a domestic context.

Week 8: Extra

I wanted to create another model as I felt like my past ones were not enough. This time I chose to complete a model out of card, of a house instead of a room.

Concept Sketch

I wanted to explore light in this model as well.

Process

I decided to make the model out of card paper as I have grown fond of using card
as a modelling medium.
Most parts of the model are outlined on paper and then folded together- they
are secured with double-sided tape for a seamless facade.

A small issue I had with the secondary component where the box was too small.

A problem I came across with the roof design was that the middle piece was not attached to anything.
Originally, I wanted to secure it with masking tape, but then realised it would be too ugly.

After some thought, I secured it with tracing paper instead.
I put double sided tape on the additional piece as well as the edges of the roof, and
then was able to secure the pieces of the roof without compromising
the aesthetics of the model.

week 8

fusion360 render

I used chrome as material finish and snowground as the envrionmental context. This created a holographic appeal which I especially like.

I added some finishes including pine and leather. I also added the water texture to create some semi-transparent effects for the top. These textures reflect me because I love winter. The pine and leather adds a homely appeal and reminds me of wintery days spent inside with a cup of hot cocoa and cookies.

week 7

fusion360 initials

Initials: P Y Z
My initials are actually P.Z.Z but I wanted to avoid using the same 3 letters so I changed the middle character to Y instead.
I had no issues with this exercise.

card model of fusion360 model from week 6

sketch

I sketched the outline of the template first to get an idea of which parts would be needed. I also drafted relative measurements so I knew the dimensions before drafting on card paper.

I used double sided tape to seal edges together so that no markings would be visible. Then I made a roof for the form, which is basically the same as the base except with foldable leaves. I didn't want to glue the roof to the structure because I prefer it if the roof was detchable.

remake of week 5 model: exploring light sources

week 5 model
In my model from week 5, I had very basic light sources which also acted as windows.

concept sketch for new light source
As a remake of week 5's model, I swapped out the floor to ceiling rectilinear windows to more organic shapes. I thought this would create more interesting and diverse shadows.

I added a human figure using photoshop.

I chose to entirely make this model out of card paper as it is easier to cut.
However,  paper is also more prone to bending. In my last picture, the right wall was bending away from the platform because of the fan shaped wall attached to it.
